An exciting new Thai restaurant and live music house is to be located at the site of the Rockaway Lobster House on beautiful Jamaica Bay in Rockaway Beach, New York.
Robert Kaskel, is aiming to revive the spot as a Thai restaurant and music venue, Thai Rock. He and his wife Metta, who owned a similar spot in Thailand and is now a bartender at Dojo, hope to open in late April or, more likely, in May (tomorrow they’ll start the process of giving the space a “beachy Thai” look). Kaskel says he plans to offer “real Thai cuisine, not watered down, Americanized Asian cuisine,” with dishes in the $8 to $18 range, and to ensure the food is literally home-cooked, he’s renting the apartments above the restaurant to three cooks who used to work in Manhattan. Four menus will change with the seasons (soups and stews during the winter, lighter fare during the summer): There’ll be lunch, brunch, dinner, and a “drinking menu” at the bar.

soooooo very excited for this!!!!! all the best can’t wait to meet you guys.
Thai Rock…DOES NOT ROCK AT ALL!!!
People are still checking out this NEWLY OPENED place, but I doubt if there will be a second time around…they should just go next door to Bungalow Bar. Or…McDonald’s, also next to it, is a better bet.
Or…if you are craving Thai food, simply go elsewhere.
I had dinner in this lousy restaurant last night, June 10, 2011.
1) Service was slow, and the meals for two people were not served at the same time.
2) Servings were small / skimpy for the price I paid.
3) Serving was wrong. I ordered Tigger Tiger, which I knew included sticky rice. The waitress had the nerve to tell me that it did not come with it. I simply asked her to show me the menu again, and pointed out words “sticky rice” to her.
4) The bus boy came to our table at least three times asking if we were done.
First, we showed him that there was only one meal, because we were waiting for the second order.
Second, we showed him the two meals barely touched, because we were waiting for the sticky rice.
Third, I simply had to ward him off since we were still working on the last few bites of our meal.
My wife , who is from Thailand , just ate some of their terrible, overpriced nea yang which was supposed to be beef(grilled), and instead it was pork fat pieces which she couldn’t even eat so she threw it in the trash. She just wanted to try the food, and will never again. We would rather drive the 15 miles to Woodside to eat REAL Thai food at Sipraphai which consistently gets kudos from Zagat, and at 1/2 the price. She was excited that “authentic” thai food was coming to Rockaway, and was sadly disappointed.
Super place – food was excellent, service was quick & helpful with great attitude and the entertainment was top notch. Last night a fellow was crooning called Miche Fambro, who I’m told will be there every Wednesday night. This will be a regular place for us.
I went this past Sunday (6/19) and was a little apprehensive after reading some comments. WOW!!! The food was to die for and the entertainment that night was just out of this world. My only complaint is that the Wait Staff were a little overwhelmed (the place was packed, inside and out) but all in all, it was acceptable. I am coming back, both for the food and for the music (Darin Brown Band) If they keep this guy’s Band I will be coming back for more !!
What a fantastic addition to the Rockaways! I was totally impressed with the decor of this brand new establishment. Wait staff were super friendly and absolutely knowledgeable. Very well stocked bar and, of course, the barman was superb! This is going to be THE place to hear great music as well as to eat fine Thai cuisine. THAI ROCKS! For Real!
I was there on Sunday, June 26. I had such a great time, even though the service was a bit slow, but the food was great! and the latino bartender was hot !!!
I will be back.
I think that it adds a touch of class to the Rockaways !
