With the closing of one of the last seedy remnants of the “old” Times Square, Bare Elegance, a new chapter is about to be played out. Pedestrian plazas have been made permanent by order of Mayor Bloomberg and the midtown project is declared a success as Times Square receives a “face-lift”.

Morus alba Pakistani “The King of the Mulberry Trees”
Saturday, May 22nd, 2010Morus alba Pakistani “the king of the mulberry trees”
This type of mulberry tree grows to a height of 50′ or more, and their 4″ long fruit is spectacular. Make sure to eat only ripe fruit unless you want a seriously puckered mouth, it ripens and is ready in early summer. The fruit blends sweet with tart in a complex berry flavor that reminds some of a “super” raspberry. The tree requires full sun, moderate summer water. Does not stain to the extent of other mulberries. Some reports of successful growth in zone 6, but a reliable grower for zones 7-10.
Bangkok’s Largest Mall, Central World, Destroyed by Protesters – Bangkok
Friday, May 21st, 2010In a protracted battle between “red shirt” protesters, backed by ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and military troops along with police; the Central World mall, which has been shut for more than six weeks has been destroyed by a fire, which was set by a faction within the protesters, who became enraged by their leaders surrender to police. Previously known as the World Trade Center, Central Pattana agreed to purchase it for 9 billion baht in December 2002 including 5 billion baht of debt incurred by the previous owners. A complicated 5 billion baht expansion & renovation of the mall took over a year and a half to complete, while existing tenants stayed on through the inconvenience of construction. Unfortunately, the building has been on fire for many hours and has collapsed; and with it the remnants of many restaurants and shops, markets and theaters. It has now been confirmed, that the opposite end of the building where Isetan Department Store is located, survived the fire.

Asean Prepares New Shrimp Farming Standards
Tuesday, May 18th, 2010
Tighter Rules to Deal with non-tariff Barriers are on the Agenda
At long last, the Asean Shrimp Alliance (ASA) has stepped forward to establish regional production standards, aimed at heading off pressure from importing countries.
A draft of the Asean Shrimp GAP (Good Agricultural Practice) was discussed recently in Bangkok by officials of some of Asean’s leading shrimp-producing countries, which include: Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. Together they produce 1 million tons of shrimp, about half of the entire global production.
The main concerns are: shrimp farming’s effect on the environment, barriers relating to farming processes, residues and price dumping. Asean standards fall below requirements of the Aquaculture Certification Council (ACC) of the US. Standards imposed by individual foreign buyers could also eventually add to production costs and weaken export competitiveness.
The recent meeting was conspicuously not attended by Brunei, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore, which have been working on the issue since last year with assistance from the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific.
ASA was formed in 2007 by Asean members, led by Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. These three countries controlled 42% of the world shrimp trade last year with combined production of 1.53 million tons.
The major markets for shrimp products are the US, the European Union and Japan. Thailand exported 395,000 tons of shrimp last year. Indonesia shipped 137,600 tons and Vietnam 100,000 tons.
In the first quarter of this year, Thailand exported 87,998 tons of shrimp products, worth 20 billion baht, a rise of 21% in volume and of 26% in value, from the same period of 2009.
