La Trattoria Terrazza, Soho – London

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Chianti-FiascoMario & Franco’s La Trattoria Terrazza on Romilly St, in Soho was responsible for introducing Italian food and making it trendy in London in 1959. Mario Cassandro, a co-founder who just passed away this year at the age of 91, along with partner Franco Lagattolla, were both former waiters at the Curzon Street restaurant, Mirabelle in Mayfair. Many other places were spawned by former employees who borrowed (to put it nicely) the same menu and the minimalist style of decor. When Princess Margaret started to frequent Terrazza, it firmly placed it on the culinary map.

Italian cooking is extremely simple, most often the creation of “mama” rather than a famous chef, and depends wholly on good ingredients rather than complicated preparations, and is the reason most dishes are easily adapted for home cooking.

Bird’s Nest Soup: Baby Birds Thrown-Away In The Name of Greed – Phuket

Monday, September 12th, 2011

krabi_caves

The Chinese have high culinary-regard for certain bird’s nests constructed by a swallow-like bird called a Swift. The nest is made from glutinous strands of the bird’s-saliva and is considered a supreme delicacy.
The tricky part of collecting edible bird’s nests is that if collected too late there is the possibility that eggs might be damaged, and if gathered too early the nests will be of inferior quality.
Pacific Swift, Edible-nest Swiftlet and Black-nest Swiflets are the species of swift that produce edible bird’s nests in Thailand, mainly in limestone caves on islands around Krabi, Phuket, and Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand.
After the first nest disappears, the female bird will automatically build a second nest, and collectors will wait a month before harvesting the second nest. The third nest, final production for the season, is where the baby birds will grow and the nest will not be harvested for three months.

As with most everything in this part of the world, and due to the high value of the nests, corruption is rampant and sometimes the unthinkable happens, the baby birds are thrown away to harvest the valuable third nest. The sad thing is that locals get very little money out of the businesses while, concession holders and governments who levy high taxes, become rich.

Opening Hours: 12:30pm – midnight

This website has had many searches for information on the Eden Club over the years. There were so many long drawn-out tales on the internet, enough to fill a book, that we did not write about it, until now; when I have heard that it is going through difficult problems, and for this I am truly sorry both to Marc and his partner who recently passed away. This succinct version follows and there will be updates as required.

What to Expect and the Rules – Here is how the Eden Club Works:
The time limit per session is roughly 90 minutes (a gentleman must take two ladies at a time minimum). It is better to choose the first lady yourself and let her pick her partner. All girls present show up and stand on the opposite side of the bar for your perusal. To get right to the point, Girls standing on the right side of the yellow line on the wall do normal sex, and those on the left will do most anything. The Eden club closes at midnight to avoid dealing with drunken men falling out of the discos, unable to appreciate the finer points of the services Eden Club offers.
If you are not satisfied you do not have to pay. “The Ladies” that you chose, escort you to a room upstairs where you will spend an hour and a half or more depending on your stamina, being scrubbed down, bedded down and waited on hand and foot by two ladies with a large briefcase full of sex tools.

I have heard rumbles, that the Eden Club is under new management, due to the illness of the owner Marc, and is not up to its past speed. We have all heard, that the short-lived Pattaya branch has been shut down and consequentially closed due to the death of Marc’s partner, while I might add, Marc had to leave his hospital bed before having heart surgery the following day, to find the partner deceased in his bed. All of this remains to be verified by reliable sources, and I will report back as soon as I hear anything, and I have my ear to the ground, regarding any updates.
