Soi Cowboy, Sukhumvit 23, Bangkok
Tel. 02 258 4332
Opening Hours: 17:30 to Closing
Credit Cards: All Major
Prices: Moderately Expensive

This is Bangkok, afer all, and a great deal of tourists from all over the world travel here to check out the nightlife, in addition to the delicious and varied selection of cuisines available in Krung Thep.

Baccara is probably the best Go-Go Bar on Soi Cowboy (the entertainment area located between Sukhumvit Soi Asoke and Soi 23) flaunting a double decked dance floor with the upper floor constructed from glass so customers on the bottom level have a view of the girls on the top level who are dressed in school uniforms sans knickers and very often the uniforms suddenly disappear. Girls in bikinis dance to the music on the bottom floor and there is also a Terrace Bar, which opens from 17:30 daily, directly in front of the Baccara where smoking is allowed.
The bar stocks a selection of Belgian, German and Japanese beers in addition to the local Thai choices. You may order a bottle of whiskey, or any other spirit and receive unlimited soft drinks and ice with your bottle order. Espresso coffee is also available.

After some time in the culinary doldrums, The Normandie Grill was dead-on at a recent lunch from beginning to finish, and that accomplished in spite of the closure of both of the city’s airports by protestors for more than a week. The only thing they could not deliver was a quince tart, although dozens of other choices were provided. I might add that the hotel was reporting the lowest occupancy in their history thanks to the political squabbling, which escalated to the point of practically shutting down the entire country.

We started with escargots and a puree of white bean soup moving right along to saute of St. Pierre, the fish being extremely delicate and enhanced by a light sauce and dollops of white foam and my companion had an incredibly delicious crayfish dish. The views of the river are spectacular from the narrow dining room and I am happy to report that the service, the cuisine including the desserts were all at the Michelin star level.

Philippe Chanut, Executive Pastry Chef Lenôtre Bangkok makes a large variety of exquisite pastries throughout the day to supply the four outlets currently operating in Bangkok. The cuisine has its ups and downs, although if you order carefully many dishes can be quite good and the staff is usually very concerned about the quality.
The pastries are always good even though the sugar level is a little too high for my palate however, this is Thailand and things have to be extra sweet to be acceptable for the Thai taste.

Bed Supper Club – Bangkok

Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30pm-midnight and until 1am on weekends

If you can tolerate Asian-Med fusion food, and do not mind to dine in a most uncomfortable position while prone in a bed, you might find Bed one of the trendiest places in town, I personal despise it!  The decor is industrial style tubular, interspersed with neon lighting and throbbing repetitive sounds. The small adjacent disco is always jammed.

“Street Bars” & Girls an Expanding Trend – Bangkok

Friday, November 21st, 2008

As the current Thai government tries to stifle their biggest money-making attraction for tourists, by forcing the closing hours of the bars in the entertainment areas to be earlier and earlier; the bars and the girls are fighting back by taking to the streets. The latest trend is “Street Bars”, bars on carts that appear on the sidewalks around 11p.m. and stay open as late as the last customer can lift a drink, at least until 5 in the morning. The girls, as well as “ladyboys” gravitating to these bars after the legitimate bars must close at around 1a.m., granted these creatures of the night are not the “cream of the crop” as the best have already been spoken for much earlier in the evening. The trend started in the Nana Entertainment area although I would think that it will expand into other entertainment areas, unless the powers that be, rethink their strategy and make some much needed changes in their policies. There is little control on the streets and I would imagine that to keep sex on the streets as contained as possible, the best way to do so is to keep things under one roof and more importantly, keeping it liberal instead of constraining what has always been a lively, growing, entertainment industry that contributes, in no small measure, to the coffers of the national treasury and to the economy of the country in general.

In Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, found out the hard way that by demolishing what he considered a dreadful, sinful, disgrace (Bugis Street and other areas) he in fact, brought the tourist industry to its knees. After he realized his error, It cost him millions to rebuild what he had already torn down, and in fact, the new structures never garnered their original popularity, even to this day many, many years later.

Beaujolais Nouveau 2008 has Arrived, Hôtel Plaza Athénée – Bangkok

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! Celebration party at Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Bangkok

The 2008 vintage resulted in a late harvest. The first grapes were picked on 15 September while the last of them were harvested in early October.

Perfect balance was reached due to the exceptionally fine weather during this crucial harvest period.

Grape bunches were allowed to stay on the vines a few days longer, which meant more intense concentration in the fruit however, yields were extremely low in all appellations of Beaujolais.

Critical Information: Grape Variety: Gamay, Region: Beaujolais, France, Harvest Commensed: September 15th 2008 100% by hand, Alcohol by Volume: 12%, Realeased 20 November 2008
This Beaujolais wine event took place at Reflections Restaurant in the Hôtel Plaza Athénée on Wireless Road, Bangkok accompanied by a sumptuous display of French delicacies from charcuterie, foie gras, main courses to cheese and desserts. George Duboeuf wines supplied by Italthai.

Escoffier Dinner, Pacific City Club – Bangkok

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

The evening’s event, “A Celebration in honor of Auguste Escoffier”, got off to a good start as guests mingled in the club’s main drawing room as they sipped a refreshing Gutswein Scheurebe Troken, Wittmann, Rheinhessen with enough acidity to balance the intense fruitiness of this German white wine or a red  Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Rene Lequin 2004.

After moving upstairs to the dining room, Peter Brongers, President of Escoffier Thailand Chapter introduced special guest Chef Robert Fontana, the President of Escoffier Greater China, as soon as all attending epicureans were seated, and following this, both gentlemen had a few words to say about the Escoffier Association.

Particularly interesting on Pacific City Club resident Chef Denis Lartigue‘s menu for the evening was the 1st course; a combination, put together in three mini-portions, of warm veal tongue, duck foie gras and spicy pork belly and lentils; next to follow, a light broth of Fine de Claire oysters, black truffle and braised celery; 3rd course filet of line caught sea bass steamed in a Varech seaweed stock and finished with a beurre Nantais.
A rose and cumin granite cleaned the palate and paved the way for the main course; Pigeon from Anjou, France caramelized with spices, which was followed by an interesting preparation of Roquefort cheese Bavarois enhanced with vanilla bean; the dinner finished with the dessert course, apple cider tart tatin with hydromel & lavender ice cream and caramel with fleur de sel.
