David Myers restaurant Comme Ça in West Hollywood was both hit and miss on the food side and maybe, I will give him the benefit of the doubt, he was out of town or at least not present on two back to back visits I made to his restaurant. Looking at it positively, the wine end with its good selection of well chosen wines, both by the glass and bottle helped to mke up for it.

The red & yellow beetroot salad was very good, while a crispy skate suffered from too much dusting that masked the subtle flavors of the fish. Profiteroles were too crispy for my liking and an unneeded,  and unwanted in my case, mass of spun sugar did nothing for the dessert but interfere,  granted it was meant as decoration. A hamburger on another visit filled with a thick patty of  good-quality beef on a pleasant tasting bun was cooked as I requested (medium-rare). An accompanying cone of pomme frites appeared as if they might be good, although that observation was to be short lived when I bit into the first soggy and limp fry. The surrounding clientele seemed pleased with what was delivered to their table however, I had the impression that a great deal of them had not the faintest idea of what French cooking was all about;  in this case it served them well.

The Roger Room, La Cienega’s First Speakeasy? Maybe

April 7th, 2011

small-logo-RDC10Tavern Tipples . . . Jared Meisler and Sean MacPherson, the people responsible for Bar Lubitsch have opened, according to them, La Cienega’s first speakeasy.  However, one of the Lawry’s locations on the west side of the street had a basement that was possibly used as a speakeasy that predated The Roger Room. We are checking it out!

Hajime Robot Restaurant – Bangkok

Hajime Robot Restaurant is amazingly fun, especially for children, who become ‘hooked’ on the concept immediately upon arrival. There is no doubt in my mind, that these same children most likely nag their parents for a return visit shortly thereafter. The parent(s) have probably had enough on the 1st round, and as amusing as the whole thing is, the food is not serious enough to warrant their attention a second time. It may be time for the Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents to take their turn!

French Chateau Wine Makers: War on Bogus Bottles – France

April 1st, 2011

Mouton_1982.jpgNew technology has supplied methods to deter criminals from selling fake wine bottles, especially through auctions and the internet. The following security measures are now, or will be in place soon, at many of the wineries that produce Grand Cru and expensive bottles of wine; this will help to stop or at least deter criminals from trying to pass off bogus bottles as genuine:

(1) a trace mineral hidden in capsule covering the cork that can be read by a testing device
(2) stamps & reference number laser etched into the glass bottles
(3) bubble tags in plastic film to seal bottle, to show that the bottle has never been opened before.
(4) testing age of old bottles by measuring radioactivity, especially with bottles predating atomic testing, without even opening them.

Some of the selections Chef Yuya presented for the course lunch for this week at Ma Du Zi appear below. Everything was quite good with the exception of the risotto (overcooked), although he is forgiven as it is an Italian dish. French chefs never seem to do Italian very well and vice versa.

Les Bouchons meaning corks in French, and the singular bouchon can also refer to a type of small bistro in Lyon, although this tiny restaurant is not known for Lyonnaise cooking but for its famous ‘steak frites’ with a platter of various condiments alongside including two types of mustard, horseradish, and a jar of prepared Bearnaise sauce instead of a freshly made one. The owners also operate the restaurant Les Angelus and have recently opened a sibling to Les Bouchons called Les Bouchons Rive Gauche. The steak frites offer good value for money, and are accompanied by a basket of fresh bread and a salad with lettuce and tomatoes lightly splashed with a proper vinaigrette. They have a selection of French wines to accompany the dish.
